History of Lake Mulehe

The lake has a different history from about 25,000 years back when it was formed by violent volcanic eruptions that occurred on the Earth’s surface due to the heat-ups in its mantle. The lake was formerly a subsistence fishing ground since the 1900s but it was later turned into a commercial fishing ground in the 1960s when the catches of tilapia fish were high and so it was graduated from just seeing it as a fishing ground but also a commercial activity.

The fishing activities on the lake further attracted tourism activities in the early 1970s and Uganda Wildlife Authority later picked interest due to the large numbers that flocked the lake with interests in tourism in the mid-1990s. The early inhabitants of the area were the indigenous Batwa people who have since then been in the area up to present day times.

The same Batwa people have extended to the interior of the Bwindi forests where they can be found up to today.
